1. Cristóbal Colón

Discovery: Columbus was the first European to reach Costa Rica on his fourth voyage in 1502. He landed on the Caribbean coast, in what is now Puerto Limón, and named the country “Costa Rica” due to its natural richness and the hospitality of the indigenous people.

2. Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés

Discovery: This Spanish chronicler and explorer documented the flora, fauna, and indigenous cultures of Costa Rica in the 16th century. His work provided valuable information about the biodiversity and original inhabitants of the country.

3. William Walker

Discovery: Although better known for his attempt to establish himself as the president of Nicaragua, Walker made incursions into Costa Rica. His actions and the subsequent filibuster war highlighted Costa Rican resistance and national unity.
